Dr. Prashant Chhajed received his medical doctorate from the University of Mumbai in 1996. He trained as a Fellow in the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, Australia, and continued as a Fellow in thoracic medicine and lung transplantation at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney.
He then joined the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Chiba University Hospital, Japan, where he was part of the original team that developed EBUS-TBNA — real-time endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration — a technique now considered the global standard for mediastinal lymph node sampling in lung cancer staging and diagnosis.
Dr. Chhajed then joined the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, as a Clinical and Research Consultant, where he was awarded the academic title of Privat Dozent. During his years in Basel, his research on lung transplantation, interventional bronchoscopy, and airway disease was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Chest, Thorax, and the European Respiratory Journal, among others.
He returned to Mumbai in 2008, where he established the Centre of Excellence for EBUS-TBNA at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi — among the first dedicated EBUS-TBNA programs in Western India — and continues to practice across Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Lilavati Hospital, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, and his own Chhajed Lung Care & Sleep Centre in Santacruz.
Dr. Chhajed has been invited faculty and speaker at national and international meetings across five continents.
